RARE...UNIQUE...AND FUN....This "Great Lakes" Whirlaway Rod and Reel should still be made today. (nice things never seem to hang around long)) Better yet...this is the "IMPERIAL 85 Whirlaway"..the Cadillac of the Whirlaways. PATENT 2,783,952 AWARDED MAR 5, 1957. See copy of the design in OTHER PHOTOS. First produced in the early 50"s, the design changed, as offered, came about from the late 60's to early 70's. Produced in in Michigan, this one has "rare" clear and brown handle. Looking at photo, you can see the nice shape it is in.....the design was made to comfortably to hold with great balance. Grooves in reel for fingers, drag control dial, two piece solid fiberglass shaft with mid-ferrule for easy carrying over all length is 6' 3" all eyes are secure and not bent. Seems like it would be easy to fish with. Just turn the handle back to cast then retrieve line by turning the handle forward. There are no cracks and all seems to work fine. Chrome is in nice shape. It is in the original box along with the original papers(see in OTHER PHOTOS. The box is NOT in good shape but after all these years it is understandable. We came across it when cleaning out a shed of a house we bought. In the box was a fishing license issued in Jan 1963. If taken care of, these reels offer a lifetime of fishing enjoyment
